3 Biggest Mistakes I Made Starting A Blog

Tell all ya friends and neighbors!

Sharing some of my biggest blogging mistakes I made in the beginning and how YOU can avoid making the same ones!

I’m just over 2 years into this blogging life and I gotta say, I wasn’t sure I was going to make it this far. I’ve also gotta say that I had no idea it would turn into what it’s turned into.

No, I’m not making millions of dollars a month. No, I don’t consider this my “full time job” (I actually have 3 jobs that I do from home to make money at the moment). But what I will say is this is way more fun than I thought it would be and I also don’t plan on quitting anytime soon.

I thought I would share with you some HUGE mistakes I made when starting in hopes that you don’t make the same ones!

My Biggest Blogging Mistakes

I put all my eggs in one basket

Simple and neutral spring decor

And that basket was Instagram. Ugh. Listen, I have a love hate relationship with Instagram. I’m on it (and am actually pretty funny over there too), but I do NOT like being on it nonstop. I am NOT an Instagram influencer. I do NOT like being tied to it. And you want to know how much traffic Instagram was sending to my blog? LESS THAN 1% OF MY TOTAL TRAFFIC. No. Big nope. I invested in a tool that helps me in other ways and I’m so glad I unchained myself from that devil.

I ignored SEO

What even is the One Room Challenge? I'm here to tell ya!

More like SE-NO, AMIRITE?! It seemed I was supposed to wait until I had a bunch of content out and was a “big girl” blogger before I did this, right? WRONG. SO wrong. SEO doesn’t really have to be that complicated and there are tons of free tools out there to help you out! Ubersuggest is one of my favorites.

I took too long to take it serious

I don’t mean serious like not funny because I will never not be funny up in here. But the best things in life are free, they said. Well, okay, thank you “they” but that ain’t always the case. Yes you can start a blog for free, but if you want to make it profitable, you’re going to have to invest time and, dare I say it, MONEY. Not tons.

I mean, here again, y’all know I proudly wear and talk about my #49centleggings ON THE REG on this blog. But once I invested smaller amounts in tools that helped me streamline the process, I started to see HUGE returns on my investment in regards to blog traffic and my overall sanity.

There you have it. Had I done those 3 things the right way and not mad those blogging mistakes, my blog could be in an entirely different place right now, but it’s not about what I shoulda coulda done. It’s what I’m FINNA DO and what I’m FINNA DO is keep it business casual up in here. I’m not real sure what that means but stay tuned. I’m not planning on going anywhere anytime soon Lord willing and the creek don’t rise!
