The Best Handheld Steam Cleaner For Your Money
The Bissell Power Steamer as seen on TikTok fully reviewed by ya girl – unsponsored and unfiltered. Come see if it’s worth the hype!
Are you like me? Do you just love a new gadget?
I can’t help myself.
We have a handheld steam cleaner for clothes that I use and love.
We also have this big hunka burnin love (literally cuz it gets so hot) that I love for bathrooms and it also doubles as a wallpaper remover which will come in handy when we tackle the bathroom nobody has seen on this blog before.
The problem lies in that I need something a little more portable for day to day.
The thing nobody tells you about craftsman style trim is although it’s gorgeous, it is quite literally just little shelves all the way through your house for dust.
EW.
I saw this girl on Instagram who saw a viral video on TikTok talk about this steamer and no joke, I added it to my Walmart cart, loaded my kids in the car and drove immediately to curbside pickup. And now I’m here giving all you fine people my God’s honest, unfiltered review about it!

So, here’s the deal – Steam cleaners are great for cleaning your home, but there are so many different brands to choose from. You want one that’s gonna get the job done, but last a long time and also be a good bang for your buck.
Hopefully by reading this (or skimming it – it’s fine. I won’t judge you) you’ll be able to at least know whether or not the Bissell Power Steamer is for you and if not, maybe one of the other ones I’ll talk about in a sec!
What is the Bissell Power Steamer?
The Bissell Power Steamer cleans by creating high pressure within a chamber that then in turn begins producing steam. The steam is effective in cleaning 99% of germs and bacteria on your hard surface chemical free!
It’s small enough to fit into tight spaces and yet has enough power to tackle just about any cleaning job in your home. It comes with 6 attachments and a hose for tighter spaces or so you don’t have to bend over if your back hurts like mine.
Man. Just reading that sentence makes me feel a million times older than I am on paper.
This portable steam cleaner is super lightweight and easy to store when not in use, which is a huge for me. While I have a forever soft spot in my heart for our Wagner steamer, it has to stay in attic storage upstairs in our guest room because there’s no room downstairs.
This one I can pop in our recently redone cleaning closet and it fits quite handsomely and pull out at my leisure for quick cleaning tasks.
How do you use a Bissell Power Steamer?
There are tons of ways you can use this little steamer, but my favorite way so far that I’ve found is baseboards. Holy guacamole.
I easily spend probably $7 on Mr. Clean Magic Erasers just to do my baseboards and now….I don’t need them anymore? A measuring cup with water to pour in this bad boy is really all I need for a good deep clean.
This steamer is $30 and so that’s like, 4 boxes of these babies right there. So it has already paid for itself.
And yes. My baseboards are still incredibly dirty.
For real y’all! You better not act like your baseboards don’t look this bad. We all know they do.
To use it is super simple – fill it with water, plug it in, wait for that red light to go off, bam!
What else can you use the Bissell Power Steamer for?
Well, a lot of things.
Taking a look at the attachments alone can tell you some things.
There’s a brush you can use for things like bathroom and kitchen fixtures. It also works on grout, which I haven’t totally tried yet because we knew we were filthy people and only used dark gray or black grout in the rooms that have grout.
There’s a flat scraping tool which you can use in places like an oven so if you’ve got stuck on gunk, you can shoot it with the steam and then scrape which I’m low key excited to try.
However, my favorite tool is the tool for baseboards, which is what I’ve been using it on quite a lot lately.
Note that this is a tool for hard surfaces. (That’s what she said) But seriously, don’t go using this on carpets, clothes, or anything crazy like that. Stick to the hard surfaces in your home like baseboards, floors, countertops, etc.
How hot do portable steamers get?
There’s nothing that specifically says on their website how this particular Bissell Power Steamer or any steamer gets, but because I was a science major in college before changing to Criminal Justice, I do know that water becomes steam at 100 degrees so I would have to think it’s at least 100 degrees or hotter.
Which means if you have little hands around, make sure you keep an eye on them. This could reeeeeally hurt.
What are the benefits of using a Bissell Power Steamer?
Well, you may be trying to keep things cleaner and more sanitized out there because of…I don’t know…there’s not like a global pandemic going on right now or anything is there?
Using the Bissell Power Steamer, you can use less chemicals and you don’t have to work as hard. Because of my PCOS, we do try to stick to all natural cleaning products like my DIY homemade cleaners to reduce any kind of hormone disrupting chemicals we’re putting in our home.
Of course, if you absolutely love chemicals and want to continue using them with this steamer, I won’t tell anyone. It’s your world.
Do handheld steam cleaners really work?
Now I’m not a doctor or a scientist, but the Bissell website claims that the steamer is 99.99% effective at removing germs and bacteria when used in the proper setting.
Do with that what you will!
What are handheld steam cleaners good for?
This will really depend on what kind of handheld steam cleaner you have, but most of them I’ve seen have cleaning tool attachments like a grout brush, tile scrubber, and some sort of detail nylon brush that is used for smaller places or projects. So it all depends on what you’re looking to use one of these bad boys for.
So far my favorite thing to clean has been baseboards and our kitchen cabinets. However, for my next trick, I will absolutely be using this in my oven with that scraper tool.
What are the dangers of using a handheld steamer?
There’s nothing that specifically says there are any dangers to these types of steamers, but I would have to think if you use it for too long on one area or leave it in one spot for too long, you could potentially damage furniture, wood floors, etc.
As I mentioned above, keep an eye on little hands and fingers so they don’t get burned by the steam itself or any of the debris that comes up when cleaning with it. It’s not hot enough to burn your skin but it does feel pretty warm…so just be smart.
My honest thoughts
What I like about it
- The Bissell Power Steamer has a very long cord, so no worrying about finding an outlet or trying to plug and unplug it a million times as I go.
- It’s small and compact and so it’s easy to store when I’m not using it which is huge because I honestly don’t wanna see it if I’m not cleaning with it.
- I love that it has an extension hose. There is another version of this steam cleaner that is essentially the same thing without the extension hose, but I’m glad I got one.
So far, it works great! I love that I’m not having to spray something down, letting it sit for a certain amount of minutes and then wipe it off. It’s literally one step and it should only take me a couple of minutes to do the whole room.
I’m really liking this so far.
What I don’t like about it
- So remember that cord I talked about earlier? I get that it needs to be there, but I wish it were cordless somehow if we’re asking for things.
- I also don’t love that there’s no way to see the water level inside so it’s a big guessing game as to how much water you have left. And since you’re supposed to empty the water out after every cleaning session, I hate just dumping water out and feeling like I’m wasting it.
- This seems to be something that’s the same amongst all top rated steam cleaners, but you can only spray steam for a handful of minutes before it has to reheat the water and make more steam so I found there was a lot of pausing which felt annoying.
- The trigger is super easy to use, but because it’s easy to use, it’s also pretty easy for kids to figure out. I wish there was some kind of a safety lock for little hands (or big hands who aren’t paying attention).
